Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (19 May 1881 -10 November 1938) the first President of modern Turkey, is credited for being the founder of the Republic of Turkey. His contribution to help Turkey rise from the crumbling Ottoman Empire and transform it into a progressive and developing coutnry of Asia and Europe are priceless.
Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, he led the Turkish national movement in the Turkish War of Independence. Having established a provisional government in Ankara, he defeated the forces sent by the Allies. His military campaigns gained Turkey independence. Atatürk then embarked upon a program of political, economic, and cultural reforms, seeking to transform the former Ottoman Empire into a modern, westernized and secular nation-state.
He is role model for many progressive leaders of the world and is revered the world over. Many Postal Authorities around the world, besides Turkey, have issued commemorative stamps befitting the personality of one of the greatest statesmen of history of the modern world.
